Cuban Thursdays and More

I've come to look forward to Thursdays, or as we say at work, Cuban Thursdays. On this new favorite day of the week, Breadline offers a Cuban Sandwich consisting of roast pork, ham, swiss, pickles & orange cumin sauce. But not just pork, succulent smokey roasted pork with savory ham, sweet pickles and a piquant orange cumin sauce on cuban bread that is both crunchy and soft from the sandwich press.

The more? That would be the soft-shelled crabs on the menu. When I first noticed the addition to the late spring menu, it was after I had placed an order for the Cuban sandwich. The guy behind the counter, noticing my tongue hanging out of my mouth, said they will be on the Thursday menu for at least the next few Thursdays. So it's a little pricey, but well worth the splurge. The batter fried softshell was served nestled on an (egg?)bread roll, smothered with a delicious homemade tartar sauce and tangy coleslaw.

Another favorite? The soft, not-too sweet chocolate-chocolate chip sandwich cookie filled with creamy mascarpone. Now, if you are accustomed to spending $5 on lunch, this isn't a cheap lunch, but it is well-prepared restaurant quality lunch that rarely disappoints. And in that respect, it's a bargain.

A year of neglect

I can't believe it has been an entire year since I have posted to the site. In March we went to Sonoma, CA for the first time. While the weather left much to be desired, we were able to visit some wineries, including Rodney Strong , Johnson's Alexander Valley Wines and Ravenswood. While you can't find Johnson's wines in the stores, it is worth the visit to check out the 1924 theater pipe organ built into the winery.

For the beau, it was a business trip, but for me, it was an opportunity to check out cheese shops and restaurants and take in a little R&R at the hotel. If you have never had the opportunity to take in a bath ritual, it is very relaxing. My only regret on the trip was not getting the recipe for the cottage cheese and lemon pancakes. While they may not sound appetizing, these were pancakes to die for. I was able to dine at Bouchon, which was a nice treat. Unfortunately for us, French Laundry reservations were a little out of reach for this trip.

Lunch in the Park

It's been way too long since I have posted an entry. Every day as I walk to get my morning coffee, I pass a very small park, mainly occupied by ducks and city birds . Recently I noticed a very tall dandelion plant with rather edible looking leaves. If you've never had dandelion leaves, they are edible and delicious in salads: recipezaar.
