Human or not

I felt less than human last Wednesday when the drunk homeless guy walking in front of me lost his balance (or fell asleep) and fell into a plot of planted ivy. I didn't help him, instead I shot him a look of concern and in turn he tipped his hat to me. I kept walking. In retrospect I wonder if I should have helped him get up. Later that night as I was getting off the metro, a guy tried to physically push me out of his way as we walked up the non-functioning escalator. He muttered something as he followed me up the stairs and I ignored him. I avoided him as we made our final ascent to the sidewalk, choosing a different escalator, as not to repeat our brief encounter. Well either the guy was blind or dumb because once we made it to the sidewalk, he started to hit on me. Just another day in DC.

Hide and Seek

Good news! I found my camera. Apparently I enjoy playing evil tricks on myself, like hiding my favorite things from myself so that I can spend weeks finding them. This last game, when I hid my camera, nearly lasted 4 weeks. All games aside, I am relieved to have it back in my hands. So relieved in fact that I took some photos today on my coffee break. I blended in well that way, given that the federal government took the day off and it was just me, my coworkers and several dozen tourists out on the street today.

Friday and the Camera's gone

It's finally Friday. I have given up hopes of finding my camera which disturbs me to no end. On weekends it has been an extension of my right arm, and now it is gone. With less guilt I can go ahead and purchase the camera that I REALLY wanted, but for some reason, I find little satisfaction in that thought. While it wasn't perfect, it perfectly suited my needs in size, weight and the quality of photos it produced. When I realize how many photo opportunities I have missed, I cringe with sadness and disappointment. It never ocurred to me that the camera could have been stolen, although that wouldn't come as surprise being that I live, work and play in the city. Oh well, off to CNET to check out the cameras.

National Book Festival

I am feeling a little guilty for neglecting my site. I've been so busy at work and home that tending to my website has fallen off to the side. I also misplaced the usb cord for uploading photos and well, in an organizing frenzy, I placed my camera somewhere safe where I wouldn't be able to find it.

Anyway, since it was my mom's birthday this past week, I took her to the National Book Festival where we got to see Jaques Pepin and Sue Monk Kidd. It wasn't a huge production, but anyone who enjoys books was bound to fid something interesting. The festival consisted of several tents labeled by genre, with authors and times posted in front of each tent. Since there was no chance of getting a book signed because of the long lines, we instead purchased books and took in a paper dress fashion show. The weather was perfect for such an event, especially given the dip in temperature over teh past few days and the threatening rain drops in the morning. Overall it was nice event, punctuated by drunken runners, both men and women dressed in red dresses running through the National Mall in a somewhat organized fashion. They were tight-lipped about their reasons for running and I am too lazy to search for a reason why. We asked several people why they were running and each one gave us a different answer???
